Tokushima Vortis conquered one of those victories that may end up being decisive for the course of the season. A 0-2 at Yokohama, one of the favourites for the promotion to Japan League 1, which up to this matchday was in third position in the standings. With this win, the fourth in five games, Tokushima Vortis now occupies that position, tied in points to Tokyo Verdy and only one behind Shonan Bellmare, leader of the competition with 13 points.
The victory against Yokahama repeated the same main characters as in recent matches: Watari and Shimaya. Both scored the goals in a very serious game by Tokushima Vortis, in which they handled wisely the advantage gained in the first half. The goalkeeper Kajikawa also joined the starring role, bright with three stops of great merit in the second half.
Watari set Tokushima Vortis ahead in the match after 22 minutes. The striker, after a good header by Sugimoto that hit the post, sent the ball to the net being faster than the defence of Yokohama in the deflection to make the 0-1. Just three minutes later came the second goal by the visiting team. Shimaya started an offensive play with a pass filtered inside the box. Same Shimaya got Yokohama’s defense clearance to make the 0-2 with a soft accurate shot with his left foot that entered the goal close to the right post. An impossible shot for Takaoka, local goalkeeper. There was not any remarkable play by Yokohama in the entire first half, annulated by the football of Tokushima Vortis.
The second half changed the tone of the match, with Yokohama pushing to reduce distances in the scoreboard. Ibba, Yokohama‘s top-class footballer, sent the ball to the crossbar in a spectacular direct free kick. In the next play, Kajikawa made a great save to a header by the local team. Tokushima Vortis chose to counter-attack, and Sugimoto could have scored the 0-3 after a great combination between Watari and Shimaya. The shot from outside the box by Sugimoto went out very close to Yokohama’s goal. The local team pushed with two more dangerous actions in the final minutes, but the scoreboard did not change.
The match ended 0-2 for the men of Ricardo Rodriguez, who are not only standing out for their offensive playing style. Also the numbers in defence are spectacular, with just two goals conceded in five games. Next matchday Tokushima Vortis faces Matsumoto Yamaga in a home game, which is in the middle of the table with seven points.
